Volunteer
CCPCR relies on the help of both international and Cambodian volunteers.
International volunteers often come to CCPCR through Star Kampuchea's Volunteer Action for Cambodia Program (VAC). Volunteers choose their time of commitment; this can be anything from one to six months and indicate the city and type of volunteering they wish to participate in.
For more information on volunteer opportunities please visit their website www.vacambodia.org or email: star-vac@starkampuchea.org.kh
To safeguard the children in our care, CCPCR strongly encourages volunteers to commit to at least two months in order to truly integrate into the community, learn about the work and complete a significant project. With the children coming to CCPCR from difficult situations, it is important for them to feel safe in their environment and the people working with them. All volunteers are required to submit a police check from their home country prior to starting work.
Volunteers also come through the New Zealand Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) Program. Volunteers who come through VSA must apply for open positions through VSA itself. VSA sponsored positions at CCPCR are only available at certain times and the postings are long term, one to two years. All VSA Volunteers receive a stipend for expenses. VSA Volunteers must be New Zealand citizens or residents. Any open positions can be found on the VSA website at www.vsa.org.nz. You can read more about VSA's work in Cambodia by visiting the country profile by clicking here.
What do volunteers do?
- Teach English at the shelters or at the Tep Maly School
- Teach life-skills; for example health & hygiene, morality, sexual education, nutrition, self esteem, etc
- Provide extra-curricular activities e.g. arts & crafts, dancing, singing, games, yoga and outings for the children at the shelters.
- Provide vocational skills training for the girls in the shelters - hairdressing, beauty therapy, computer & office skills, sewing, weaving, crafts, business skills, etc.
- Building maintenance/upgrade - plumbers, builders, electricians, landscapers (in these roles it is likely the materials would also have to be donated for the work)
- Hygiene and health services - nurses, doctors, nutritionists and dentists (counselors generally have to be able to speak Khmer to communicate with the girls).
- Volunteers may also be placed at the Office to help with editing reports (English language), website updating, training material development, grant writing, funding research and strategic development (this sort of placement would be for those volunteers are able to commit to two or more months and has relevent experience).
You can always help us by being a ‘Virtual volunteer’! Over the internet you can help network for us – do you know anyone that can offer us support – a business, teacher or friend? You can help promote CCPCR by putting a link on your website/blog, by talking about CCPCR on social media, forwarding our newsletters, telling your friends and family about us, etc.
* Please note: unfortunately due to our limited operating budget, CCPCR cannot provide volunteers with any expenses/stipends i.e. volunteers must be able to support themselves for the duration of their volunteer placement.
